Mexican Spotted Owl Surveyor Information
In coordination with the U.S. Forest Service, the US Fish and Wildlife Service offers a Mexican Spotted Owl Surveyor Training each year. The training emphasizes identification of owl habitats and use of the bet365下载ios 2012 Mexican spotted owl survey protocol in forest habitats. Completion of this survey training, or one similar, is recommended for all currently permitted and future permit applicants who plan to conduct Mexican spotted owl surveys in New Mexico.
Objectives of the survey training course are to:
- Ensure consistency and quality of surveys following the Service-approved protocol, for purposes of Endangered Species Act consultation and compliance, and
- Increase the number of qualified surveyors in New Mexico, in order to increase our knowledge of the distribution of the owl in New Mexico.
This training session consists of classroom and field portions. Successful completion of all portions of the training is required to apply for, maintain, or renew survey permits in New Mexico.
The 2025 training will be offered in the Spring and dates will be posted as soon as available. Day one will consist of a classroom session and field visit with nighttime calling. Day two includes a morning habitat walk and wrap up discussion.鈥
