K墨lauea Point National Wildlife Refuge鈥檚 dramatic backdrop of steep cliffs plunging to the ocean offers breathtaking views overlooking the Pacific, and it is one of the most popular spots for visitors and residents of Hawai鈥榠 alike, attracting over 500,000 visitors annually!
K墨lauea Point National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1985 to preserve and enhance seabird nesting colonies and was expanded in 1988 to include Crater Hill and M艒k艒lea Point. The Refuge is home to the historic Daniel K. Inouye K墨lauea Point Lighthouse, which sits on the northernmost point of Kaua鈥榠. The Daniel K. Inouye K墨lauea Lighthouse was built in 1913 as a navigational aid for commercial shipping between Asia and Hawai鈥榠. For 62 years, the light guided ships safely along Kaua鈥榠's rugged north shore.
The Refuge is home to some of the largest populations of nesting seabirds in in the main Hawaiian Islands. Visitors also have a chance to view spinner dolphins, Hawaiian monk seals, native Hawaiian coastal plants and Hawai鈥榠鈥檚 state bird - the n膿n膿 or endangered Hawaiian goose.
