Two boys paddling a kayak canoe hybrid boat o bayou

There are a multitude of places to explore by paddling the refuge. Launches are available at the Big Alabama Bayou at the Sherburne Unit Headquarters, and at Big Alabama Bayou along Landing Road. There is a public launch on the northern portion of Little Alabama Bayou. Your best bet for paddling are Big and Little Alabama bayous. There is also a boat launch off of Hwy 10, at the intersection with Hwy. 975 under the I-10 bridge over the Whiskey Bay Piot Channel. Be aware there may be lots of motorboat traffic.

Water levels fluctuate in the Atchafalaya NWR. Flooding may occur in late winter and spring months when the Atchafalaya Basin Flood Spillway diverts water into the refuge. May through September are typically dryer, and can be hot and buggy. Bring sunscreen, plenty of water, and insect repellent.
