ESA鈥檚 Stamps of Excellence
Did you ever say to yourself, 鈥淕osh, it sure would be cool if a Guam kingfisher, or sihek, maybe a candy darter, delivered my mortgage check.鈥 Well, it鈥檚 no longer a dream. Thanks to the yearlong celebration of the Endangered Species Act鈥檚 50th anniversary, a host of endangered animals stand ready to meet your postage needs.
The U.S. Postal Service is featuring 20 charismatic endangered species on a set of stamps that recognize the anniversary.
There are stamps for any occasion. Writing your best friend? Might we suggest a black-footed ferret stamp? Not just because black-footed ferrets are adorable (and we assume you think your friend is) but because around the Service, it is also known by its initials: BFF. Applying for an evening or night job? Perhaps use a Florida panther stamp. The endangered panther is generally more active at dusk and night.
The images for the stamps come from the more than 13,000 species in Joel Sartore鈥檚 National Geographic Photo Ark project. Sartore is working to take photos of every species under human care 鈥 in zoos, aquariums, and wildlife sanctuaries. The goal is to inspire people to protect the world鈥檚 wildlife.
The Endangered Species Act is about protection, too, and it鈥檚 been amazingly successful. It鈥檚 credited with saving 99% of the imperiled species it protects.
