90 WILD years and counting!
Celebrating Seney National Wildlife Refuge's 90th Anniversary

Written By

Seney National Wildlife Refuge was established December 10, 1935.

We are excited and grateful to be celebrating its 90th year as your wildlife refuge. So many things have happened over the 90 years we鈥檝e been neighbors. Whether you visit the refuge occasionally or regularly, you鈥檝e seen changes. Changes in the landscape, the wildlife and our management practices. What hasn鈥檛 changed is our commitment to work with others to conserve protect and enhance fish, wildlife, plants and their habitats. We continue to strive for protecting the natural world so current and future generations can live with, live from, and find awe in lands, waters, and wildlife.

Join us in recognizing this 90 year milestone. Here are a few things we鈥檒l be doing in partnership with the Friends of Seney National Wildlife Refuge and others. Email seneyrefuge90years@gmail.com for questions.

Share YOUR Seney Story

You are part of our history and we鈥檇 like to hear your story! Part of this celebration includes collecting and archiving community stories about what we love about Seney, what it鈥檚 meant to you and your family, and how it matters to our communities.

Having a FEAST or two.

We had our first FEAST, Friends Eating and Storytelling Together in March. We will have several more over the coming months. The FEASTs are an opportunity to gather together in a community

potluck and to listen and tell stories about Seney and how it matters to you, recalling your favorite memories.

Build Something Wild!

Enter our Wild Brick Build. Use your creative side and build a Wild creation from plastic bricks (like Legos or Duplos) that represents something you love about Seney鈥 tree, bear, butterfly, flower, loon, fish. Your creation will be exhibited at the Erickson Center for the Arts during the 906 Festival and at Loonapalooza. Many libraries in the region will be participating and will have some bricks for you to borrow if you need them. You can also enter a photo of your creation instead of the actual build. Entries can be submitted now through August 2.

Take a hike with us!

We plan to conduct Wildlife Wednesday auto tours in July and August as well as monthly bird hikes. Keep an eye on our calendar.

Listen and Learn

Throughout the summer, will be partnering with the Friends of Seney National Wildlife Refuge, Erickson Center for the Arts, libraries throughout our region, Department of Natural Resources of the Sault Tribe, Bay Mills Community College and local businesses to bring speakers and presentations to local venues.

The Loonapalooza Lectures continue this year and will be on August 22 at The Pine Performance Center at Erickson Center for the Arts in Curtis, MI.

Join the Community Read

We鈥檒l be announcing our first community book read. The read will continue through August with the help of our many public libraries and other partners. We鈥檒l have a related lecture at Loonapalooza and a regional culminating conversation about what we鈥檝e all learned.

Share your photos

Instead of a refuge photo contest, the Erickson Center for the Arts will have a refuge category for their photo contest this year.

Watch the Local News

The local news is helping us share our history by publishing historical photos of the refuge and by sharing stories to help you learn more about our past and the upcoming events this year.
